No jackpot winning ticket sold. Mega Millions jackpot breaks to $65 million

There has been another roll-over in the jackpot for the multistate Mega Millions - to $65 million. The cash option stands at an estimated $48.6 million. The grand prize grew because no one hit all six numbers from Friday night's $60 million drawing. The numbers from Friday night, February 28th, 2020 were 02-03-14-41-64 and the Mega Ball was 17, Megaplier was 2.
Although the grand prize was not awarded Friday evening, Mega Millions did produce some big winners. A total of 9 lucky winners won the third prize. These included 9 tickets that matched four white ball numbers plus the Mega Ball and won $10,000.
Additional prizes won Friday evening included 244 tickets that matched 4 lotto numbers and won $500. There were 601 tickets that matched three white ball numbers plus the Mega Ball and also won $200.
With 9 ways to win, there were 886,420 winning tickets sold nationwide in the Friday, February 28th, 2020 drawing.
Mega Millions is a consortium involving 44 state lotteries. On average, 50% of the Mega Millions sales goes back for the players through prize winnings. About 15% is used to as commission of retailers and lottery operation expenses. Around 35% total sales is used to support government services, education and charities in the member states. Mega Millions drawings are held 2 times a week every Tuesday and Friday night at 7:59 p.m. Pacific Time. Mega Millions lottery uses a 5/70+1/25 system to randomly pick winning numbers. Each play costs $1. In some states, players can choose to pay $1 extra to purchase the Megaplier, which multiplies the original winnings 2 to 5 times but not grand prize. The overall chances of winning is about 1 to 14. The chances of matching 6 Mega Millions numbers are 1 to 302,575,350. The minimum Mega Millions jackpot starts at 40 million dollar. Its annuity option is paid in 30 equal yearly installments. Winners can choose one-time lump-sum cash payout instead.
In contrast to other Mega Millions states, all the 9 prize tiers of California Mega Millions are pari-mutuel, rather than non-jackpot prize having a set amount. This causes different amounts of prize for equivalent winning tickets sold in the state of California when compared to those sold in other lotteries. For example, the second Mega Millions prizes is a million dollar could pay the winner more than a million dollar due to the pari-mutuel payout system of California lottery. For the same reason, California state lottery does not offer Megaplier like other Mega Millions participants.
