Tuesday's Mega Millions jackpot breaks to $45 million; 1 second prize ticket sold

The Mega Millions multi-state lottery grand prize jumped to $45 million (lump-sum cash payout $31.7 million) Tuesday night when there were no jackpot winners in the $34 million drawing, lottery officials said. The numbers from Friday, October 1st, 2021 drawing were 21, 25, 36, 62, 63 and the Mega Ball was 06, Megaplier was 2. There was no jackpot winning ticket sold in the past 830 draws since Friday, October 4th, 2013.The last jackpot was won by a lucky ticket sold in Maryland, matched all six numbers for a $189 million top prize.
While the grand prize was not awarded Friday evening, some players still walked away with big money. There was a sole second prize winning ticket from Friday night's drawing, matching the first five lotto numbers except the Mega Ball number. The 1 lucky ticket(s) purchased in , each won one million dollar cash by matching all 5 white ball numbers.
Additional prizes won Friday evening included 9 tickets that matched four white ball numbers plus the Mega Ball and won $10,000. Also, 246 tickets matched four of the five lotto numbers. Those tickets are each worth $500. 710 tickets matched three of the five lotto numbers, as well as the Mega Ball number. These tickets are also each worth $200.
With 9 prize levels, there were 1,199,000 winning tickets sold across U.S. in the Friday, October 1st, 2021 drawing.
Mega Millions game can be played in 43 states and Washington DC. Around 50% of the Mega Millions sales goes back towards the players through prize winnings. Around 15% is used to as commission of retailers and lottery operation expenses. Roughly 35% total sales is used in government services, education and charities in the participating states. Mega Millions drawings occur every Tuesday and Friday night at 7:59 PM Pacific Time. Each play costs $1. In some states, players can choose to spend $1 extra to purchase the Megaplier, which multiplies the original winnings 2 to 5 times but not jackpot. The chances of winning is about 1 to 14. The chances of winning Mega Millions jackpot are about 1 in 302 million. The minimum Mega Millions jackpot starts at $40,000,000. The annuity option is paid in 30 equal annual payments. Winners may choose one lump sum cash payout instead.
Contrary to other Mega Millions states, all the nine prize tiers of California Mega Millions are parimutuel, instead of non-jackpot prize having a fixed amount. This leads to different amounts of prize for equivalent winners sold in California when compared to those sold in other 43 jurisdictons. As an example, the second Mega Millions prizes is a million dollar could pay the winner more than a million dollar due to the pari-mutuel payout system of California lottery. For the same reason, CA state lottery does not offer Megaplier like other Mega Millions participants.
