The jackpot for Friday's Mega Millions drawing skyrockets to $401 million

There has been another carry over in the jackpot for the multistate Mega Millions - to $401 million. The lump-sum cash payout stands at an estimated $305.4 million. The grand prize grew since no one matched all five lotto numbers and the Mega Ball number from Tuesday night's $376 million drawing. The numbers drawn Tuesday night, December 29th, 2020 were 01, 31, 35, 48, 62 with Mega Ball 19 and Megaplier X3.
Although there was no grand prize winner Tuesday evening, some players still walked away with big money. A total of 20 lucky tickets won the third prize. Among them, 20 tickets matched 4 of the 5 lotto numbers, as well as the Mega Ball number. Those tickets are each worth $10,000.
Other prizes won Tuesday night included 597 tickets that matched four lotto numbers and won $500. There were 1599 tickets that matched 3 white ball numbers as well as the Mega Ball and also won $200.
With nine different prize tiers, there were 2,357,292 winning tickets sold nationwide in the Tuesday, December 29th, 2020 drawing.
Mega Millions is one of the most popular lottery games in the U.S. offered in 44 participating states as a shared jackpot game. On average, 50% of the Mega Millions sales goes back to the players in prizes. About 15% is used to as commission of retailers and lottery operation expenses. Around 35% total sales is used to support government services, education and charities in the member lottery states. Mega Millions drawings are held 2 times a week every Tuesday and Friday night at 7:59 p.m. Pacific Time. To play Mega Millions, choose 5 numbers from a set of 70 then choose one Mega Ball number from 1 to 25. Each play costs $1. In some states, players can choose to spend $1 extra to purchase the Megaplier option, which multiplies the original winnings 2 to 5 times but not jackpot. The minimum Mega Millions advertised grand prize is 40 million dollar. Its annuity option is paid in 30 equal annual installments. Winners may select one-time lump sum cash payout instead.
Contrary to other Mega Millions states, all the 9 prize levels of California Mega Millions are parimutuel, instead of non-jackpot prize having a fixed value. This results in different amounts of prize for equivalent winning tickets sold in the state of California when compared to those sold in other jurisdictons. For instance, the second Mega Millions prizes is a million dollar could pay the winner more than a million dollar due to the pari-mutuel payout system of California lottery. For the same reason, California state lottery doesn't have Megaplier like other Mega Millions participants.
