Friday's Mega Millions jackpot moves to $187,000,000; 2 second prize tickets sold

The projected grand prize for Tuesday night's drawing was $165,000,000. According to Mega Millions, no player hit every number and the grand prize rolled up to a projected $187,000,000. The cash option will be $$91 million. The winning numbers drawn Tuesday night, January 9th, 2024 were 12, 15, 32, 33, 53 with Mega Ball number 24 and Megaplier 3. Nobody won the Mega Millions grand prize in the past nine draws since Tuesday, December 12th, 2023.
Even though there was no jackpot winner Tuesday evening, Mega Millions had some big winners. There were 2 second prize winning tickets from Tuesday night's drawing, matching the first five white ball numbers except the Mega Ball number. The 2 second prize winning ticket(s) bought in CA(2) will collect a million dollar cash each.
Also, 12 tickets matched four of the five lotto numbers, plus the Mega Ball number. Those tickets are each worth $10,000. Additional prizes won Tuesday evening included 257 tickets that matched four white numbers and won $500. There were 694 tickets that correctly matched three white ball numbers plus the Mega Ball and also won $200.

Mega Millions is a consortium of 44 state lotteries. It holds the record highest jackpot of $656 million in U.S. lottery history. Around 50% of the Mega Millions sales goes back to the players through prizes. Around 15% is used to as retailer commissions and lottery operation expenses. About 35% total sales is used to support government services, education and charities in the member lottery states. To play, choose 5 numbers from a set of 70 and pick one Mega Ball number from a set of 25. The minimum Mega Millions jackpot starts at 40 million dollar. Its annuity option is paid in 30 equal yearly payments. Winners may choose one-time lump sum cash payout option instead.
Contrary to other Mega Millions participants, all the nine prize levels of California Mega Millions are parimutuel, rather than non-jackpot prize having a fixed value. This causes different prize amounts for equivalent winning tickets sold in California when compared to those sold in other lotteries. Such as, the second Mega Millions prizes is $1,000,000 could pay the winner over $1000,000 due to the pari-mutuel payout system of California lottery. For the same reason, California state lottery does not offer Megaplier like other Mega Millions participants.
