Mega Millions jackpot rises to $291 million; One second prize ticket sold

With no winner in the last draw, the Mega Millions game jackpot will be worth an estimated $291 million (cash option $224.7 million) the next time the multistate lottery is drawn on Tuesday. The amount rolled over because nobody matched all 6 winning numbers to win the $276 million grand prize Friday night. The winning numbers from Friday, December 11th, 2020 drawing were 19, 31, 37, 55, 67 with Mega Ball 25 and Megaplier X4.
Although the grand prize was not hit Friday evening, Mega Millions had some huge winners. There was a sole 2nd prize winner from Friday night's Mega Millions drawing, matching the first five lotto numbers but not the Mega Ball number. The one second prize winning ticket(s) bought in will collect $1,000,000 cash each.
Additional prizes won Friday evening included 9 tickets that matched 4 white numbers in addition to the Mega Ball and won $10,000. Additional winners Friday night included 440 tickets that matched 4 lotto numbers and won $500. 982 tickets matched three of the five lotto numbers, plus the Mega Ball number. These tickets are also each worth $200.
With 9 prize tiers, there were a total of 1,529,914 winning tickets sold across the nation in the Friday, December 11th, 2020 drawing.
Mega Millions is a consortium of 44 state lotteries. It holds the record biggest jackpot in United States lottery history. On average, 50% of the Mega Millions sales goes back for the players through prizes. About 15% is used to as retailer commissions and lottery operating costs. Approximately 35% total sales is used in government services, education and charities in the member lottery states. Each play costs $1. In some states, players can choose to pay 1 extra dollar to buy the Megaplier, which multiplies the prizes 2 to 5 times except jackpot. The overall chances of winning is about 1 to 14. The odds of winning Mega Millions grand prize are 1 to 302,575,350. The minimum Mega Millions jackpot starts at $40 million. The annuity option is paid in 30 equal annual installments. Winners can select one time lump-sum cash payout instead.
Unlike other Mega Millions states, all the nine prize levels of California Mega Millions are parimutuel, rather than non-jackpot prize having a set value. This results in different amounts of prize for equivalent winning tickets sold in the state of California when compared to those sold in other states. One example is, the second Mega Millions prizes is $1,000,000 could pay the winner over $1000,000 due to the pari-mutuel payout system of California lottery. For the same reason, CA state lottery doesn't have Megaplier like other Mega Millions participants.
